On waiting for time to pass

Rather than grin and bear this groundhog day-to-day, what can we find enjoyment in? Recently Sundays have become my new try-new-recipes-day. I needed something that I could do inside that didn’t involve more screen time. I needed something that differentiated the day from other more work-oriented days. I needed something that reminded me to enjoy life.

Rather than a place of lack, how can we find and see opportunities in this current period? When I was single, I remained optimistic that one day I’d meet the right person (which I did eventually), but I also learnt to enjoy the freedoms of my single life. I knew that once I was in a committed relationship, there was a chance I wouldn’t have this single freedom again so I’d best enjoy it. After coming out of a long-term relationship, I remember realising that after my 9-5, I could do whatever I like. I didn’t need to accommodate anyone. I could choose when and what I had for dinner. I relished going to the cinema on my own, no interruptions, taking as much space as I’d like.

Lockdown is incredibly tough. But it’s finally getting warmer, sunnier, birds are chirping, flowers are popping out. Yes, we’re heavily restricted, but we are creative. Children, before the rules of adulthood, find more enjoyment in the cardboard box than the toy it holds. Where might our imagination and creativity be hiding under? Are we worried about looking silly, failing, wasting some money, some time? Even so, so what?

As the quote goes – “If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough” (Jillian Michaels). These days, we’re keeping ourselves safe, but that doesn’t mean we need to keep ourselves small.

Break some eggs, create some mess, and remember to laugh.
